Research based, authentic and practical insights into school improvement principles and strategies that work.
Schools are complex organisations. There are a myriad of elements (jigsaw pieces) that make up the whole, and they all impact in various ways on the overall performance and wellbeing of the school, and ultimately on student outcomes. While international research provides a plethora of pathways for school improvement and definitions of school improvement strategies, there are common elements evident in the complexity of the school as an organisation. Knowing which elements to focus on can be a daunting task. The JIGSAW to high performance provides specific insights and tools to assist Principals to fully understand their school’s culture and expose those elements (causes) that may be inhibiting student achievement. Organisational culture and teaching and learning culture play critical roles in ensuring a school is high performing and self-improving. The culture and climate within each school ultimately drive its quality, and lay the foundation for the development and growth of all students.

Peer professional teaching and learning observation
International research indicates that teachers and leaders rarely talk about the professional reason for being in teaching; improving learning for all students. To talk deeply, wisely and practically about teaching and learning must permeate the entire school environment.
Powerful Learning is designed to develop these deep conversations. The Powerful Learning process is an explicit practice that is designed to objectively and systematically discuss the instructional core in the classroom; the interaction between the teacher, student and content. The tasks that students do within that core actually drive student learning. There is no point knowing that there is an instructional core, if the core itself differs from one classroom to another, and if we aren’t trained to think about instruction as a collective practice.
Powerful Learning is a set of practices that forces classroom observers to begin the difficult process of forming a coherent view of what constitutes powerful teaching and learning in classrooms. The concept behind Powerful Learning is that everyone involved, the teacher and observers, are working on the classroom practice, through a shared and knowledgeable understanding of what is highly effective teaching and learning practice. What determines what students know and are able to do is not what the curriculum says they are supposed to do, or even what the teacher thinks they are asking the students to do, what predicts performance is what students are actually doing!
The unique aspect of Powerful Learning is that it is done by looking down at students, not up at the teacher! In this process teachers focus not on teaching deficits, but on the type of learning that is occurring and how they can increase the power of learning, and ultimately their own practice. It’s not about whether it was great or we liked it; it’s about understanding the teaching, and whether it’s producing the kind of learning we want.
